NEW - 4th Edition Revised and Expanded
Shed the illusion that the building in your yard in which tools and backyard equipment are stored must be, by definition, a boring and ugly necessity.
Now revised and expanded, SHEDS contains absolutely everything you need to know to design, build and enjoy the ultimate backyard shed.
Award-winning designer David Stiles helps you think through the issues involved in shed design, such as use, size, cost, placement and "degree of difficulty." Following a chapter on construction basics, he guides you through each step of building a simple 8 x 10-foot shed -- from foundation to cupola and everything in between.
This core chapter includes a materials list, step-by-step illustrated instructions and a daily labor schedule, as well as new information on timber framing and moving your shed to a different location.
The book then presents several basic sheds, along with a number of more complex special-use sheds, including a basic 8 x 10 shed, 11 x 10 saltbox shed, irish garden shed, japanese boat shed, 9 x 10 storage shed on posts, and a 10 x 11 potting shed.
The all-new storage shed on posts allows you to situate your building on a slope.
Packed with detailed illustrations, plans, commonsense advice and an inspiring selection of color photographs, SHEDS is like having a consultant at your side as you work.
Whether you are an average amateur builder or an ambitious expert, this book has something for you. If you want to build a shed, you'll want this book.

"Reviews from this book:"
Hello there, I've been meaning to send you some photos of one your shed designs I built a couple years ago and finally got around to it over these holidays. It was a blast to build and your plans and instructions were super. We use it a ton, both as a storage shed and as a little cabin in suburbia. When I was building it I ran into a guy who was tearing down and old mill near here that had real 1 x 12 cedar that I used for the siding and I tried to fit the cabin under an old cedar tree in the yard which gave it a "always had been there sort of feeling". And the skylight really does a great job of filling the shed with light - nice touch. Anyway, thanks for a great book and I am ordering your cabin book soon. Thanks again, Ed Caldwell, Everett, WA
My husband purchased your book: Sheds The Do-It-Yourself Guide for Backyard Builders and used many of the plans and techniques from it. You will see from the attached pictures that, although our shed and covered patio are not exactly the same as your plans, they were definitely inspired by the pictures and plans within the book. We wanted to thank you for the inspiration. Although we still have several finishing touches to complete (I think that is part of the process when you do your own renovating!), the projects are essentially complete and we are very proud of our final product. We have enjoyed several lovely afternoons and evenings in our new covered patio. Thanks again for the inspiration and for the opportunity to share our photos with you. Karen and Tim Gigliotti, Toronto, ON
This book was fantastic and I wanted to let all your readers know that even a little old Grandma can build a shed just like the ones pictured here. I retired a couple of years ago and live off some annuities so I do pretty well, but not well enough to become a world traveler or anything. Instead, I took up gardening. After a bit I thought my garden could use a nice shed but the ones at the store were very expensive. A friend recommended this book, and I'm glad he did! It took about 3 months (and a helpful grandson) but now I have a splendid little place to store all my tools that is the highlight of my garden - at least, until I start getting into your Garden Furniture book! Thanks, Jade M. (Retired Nurse and proud Grandma).
David and Jeanie, I just wanted to thank you for your books! I wanted to build a garden shed for my wife and found your book the best source. I constantly referred to it and could not have done it without you! Everything from the info on the roof pitch to safety to the type of siding. I thought it was all great! Thanks, Jeff Dinardo
I have bought and read every book I cold find about designing and building small buildings. I have to admit that David Stiles has done a fabulous job in presenting building knowledge to a do-it-yourselfer. The illustrations, drawings, and pictures capture the imagination. I have personally reread this book several times and have made it required reading for the carpenters that work with me here at the shop. A must read for anyone thinking of constructing an outbuilding sanctuary. JamaicaCottageShop.com
This book's a winner. I couldn't have built my shed without this primer. A reader from Milton, MA
We bought the hardcover edition of this book a few years back. It gets the ideas rolling in your head. My husband and I built a very cool shed after being inspired by the ideas in Stiles book. Linda Kenzle, author of Gathering
When I found this book, I thought even I could build a Potting Shed! As a total 'Do-It-Yourselfer', I used this book as a guide through the entire building process. Having never attempted a project like this, I was inspired by the different variations and types of sheds this book demonstrated. Thanks to the author for offering all the directions to build a shed from start to finish. I couldn't have built my shed without this primer. I also used his valuable ideas for the interior as well. Now I have an outdoor oasis to escape to, I have increased my property value, and am looking to build my next outdoor project!
